Welcome to the Newport Chowder Company family. We’re excited for you to experience the magic of my mom Muriel’s award-winning seafood chowder. She perfected the chowder recipe and served it at her famous Newport restaurant called Muriels. After the recipe won in the Newport Chowder Festival for three consecutive years, it was entered into the Chowder Hall of Fame. We can’t blame Muriel for keeping her award-winning recipe a secret, but we’ve come up with a way to share it with you: Spice Packs! Newport Chowder Company sells its secret Spice Packs in select retail locations and online. Our family has made countless memories over a bowl of Muriel’s chowder, and we’re sure these Spice Packs will gift this magic to your family and friends. It all began when...
Muriel Barclay de Tolly was born in Nova Scotia Canada, and immigrated to the United States with her husband George. In 1985, she opened the famous Muriel’s restaurant, in Newport, Rhode Island with the help of her six children.
On a dare, she entered her seafood chowder in the Newport Chowder Festival and went on to win the contest for three consecutive years. This placed her in the Newport, Rhode Island Chowder Hall of Fame in 1989.
Although she retired from her restaurant in 1999, her delicious seafood chowder recipe, with its secret spices, is still available.
